This past week we hosted a visit from the judge of the Australian Sustainable Cities Awards – Cameron Little.
Mitchell Pearce with Cameron Little, Judge of the Australian Sustainable Cities Awards
Cameron was in Canberra to judge Canberra Urban Honey for the National Sustainable Cities Award. We became national finalists for the ACT when we were awarded the overall winner for the ACT Sustainable Cities Award and you can read more about that in our previous blog titled Sustainable Cities

We spent the whole day showcasing urban agriculture in our city and our project, Canberra Urban Honey. I’m very grateful to our hive hosts Stephen Knight and Barbara Wheeler. Stephen and Barbara welcomed the judge and I into their gorgeous garden. I especially appreciated the way they helped Cameron understand how Canberra Urban Honey helps to overcome the pollination problems we have related to lack of bees.

Showcasing our role in sustainability and urban agriculture
Collaborating with other organisations is a key part of our success and we took the opportunity of being judged for the National Sustainable Cities Awards to also showcase our collaboration with Hotel Realm.

Our day ended with a tour of how we help our bees, and the hive be as healthy as possible so they are effective pollinators for our city.
Healthy bees are more effective pollinators
It was an incredibly rewarding experience to spend the day with someone as passionate about sustainability as I am. I’m looking forward to travelling over to Adelaide in late November to attend the National Awards Ceremony, which is being hosted by last years winner: the City of Marion.
Cheers
Mitch
